SCA NH Conservation Corps

SCA Logo

The purpose of SCA New Hampshire Conservation Corps (NHCC) is to serve the communities and land of New Hampshire by accomplishing significant conservation service projects, enhancing and protecting natural areas and providing environmental education to promote the understanding and stewardship of these natural areas. In the tradition of the Civilian Conservation Corps, 18-25 year-old NHCC members dedicate a year of their lives to perform direct hands on service throughout New Hampshire while building their leadership skills and developing their ethic of service and citizenship.

Education Service

From January through April, 25 SCA/NHCC members provide direct service to over 1500 youth in Manchester and Allenstown, NH. Members develop and implement a 9 week environmental education curriculum at both the elementary and middle school levels, reaching 12 public schools and over 50 classrooms. The environmental education curriculum aims to inspire lifelong stewardship of our environment and communities by engaging young people in hands-on environmental education and service learning. SCA NHCC members also serve as educators, tutors, and mentors in several after-school programs including the 4-H Gone Wild program and Salvation Army's tutoring program and Kid's Café. Traveling through the state you may see members teaching the water cycle in a public school classroom, tutoring students at an after school center, completing a service learning project with a 4th grade class, or serving and eating dinner with 150 young people. The SCA NH Conservation Corps also manages the Discover the Power of Parks program. In partnership with PSNH and NH State Parks, six NHCC Interpretive Rangers deliver campfire programs, guided hikes, hiker information and safety training to the 6,000,000+ annual visitors to NH State Parks.

Conservation Service

From April through October, 20-30 members serve on public lands throughout the state of New Hampshire. Partnering with NH State Parks, Conservation Commissions, Federal Land Management agencies, towns, counties, land trusts and other organizations, crews of corps members complete vital conservation projects from the slopes of Mt. Monadnock to the Great Woods of the North Country. Crews conduct flood control and cleanup, restore native habitat, and control erosion. Crews build new trails, reconstruct trails damaged by overuse, erosion or neglect and restore wetlands and marshes. Crews build trails structures such as rock staircases, rustic timber bridges and boardwalks and are involved in the restoration of historical structures and building new visitor facilities such as pavilions and cabins.

Manchester Conservation Leadership Corps

The Conservation Leadership Corps (CLC) is a year-round program which engages high school students from Manchester in leadership development, environmental education and outdoor skills training. CLC members meet several weekends each month to complete conservation service projects in their community. In partnership with White Mountain National Forest, CLC members also spend two weeks of the summer in the mountains maintaining hiking trails and restoring habitat.

SCA's NH Conservation Corps is a joint venture funded by SCA, the Corporation for Community and National Service (AmeriCorps) and various state, federal, municipal and private organizations.
