AmeriCorps alum and New Hampshire native is tackling Texas’ housing crisis head on in his work through with Habitat for Humanity.

As the Chief Impact Officer for Austin Habitat for Humanity, Billy Whipple has shaped a 14 year career around his beginnings at the housing nonprofit and in AmeriCorps. He has also supplemented that experience with a graduate degree through the School of National Service program offered by UNH to former AmeriCorps members.

Billy graduated from Dover High in New Hampshire with a passion for art and science of construction, and was met with a U.S. economy in recession.

“I was a young, ambitious builder with nothing to build,” Billy said in a feature in the UNH College of Professional Studies’ fall 2024 course guide. “… Following in my older brother’s footsteps, I discovered AmeriCorps and began working with Habitat for Humanity.”

Billy joined AmeriCorps for an 11 month stint in Austin, Texas. Here, although his experience was during a time of economic and housing market turmoil, he was able to address the housing crisis that was the leading cause of workforce shortages in Texas.

“What I thought would be an 11-month stint has turned into my home,” said Billy, who added he has gotten experience in volunteer engagement, client services and senior leadership teams.

Billy remained in Austin as an employee of Habitat for Humanity. After a decade of gaining on-the-job experience in leadership and strategic planning, he decided to return to graduate school.

Billy was able to utilize the benefits of being a former AmeriCorps member by returning to UNH in an online program for his graduate degree at a discounted rate.

“When I returned for graduate school a decade later, seeing how UNH valued AmeriCorps alumni was very inspiring,” Billy said. “The partnership is helpful because I know that my service is acknowledged and appreciated by the school, and this gives me a lot of pride in both.”
