This month Volunteer NH is focused on sharing resources and highlighting organizations addressing mental health issues. One of the ways Volunteer NH aids these Granite State organizations is through hosting Get Connected. Get Connected is a free-to-use volunteer opportunity database that matches organizations with individuals who are eager to give back to their communities.
To close out the month, we’re sharing how Granite State nonprofits utilize volunteers and Get Connected, and the passionate work carried out daily to beat the stigma of mental health issues and aid in one of our state’s biggest issues.
Back in the Saddle Equine Therapy Center

1. How does your organization utilize service and volunteers to address challenges faced by those with mental health conditions? Why is this work important?
At Back In The Saddle Equine Therapy Center (BITS), our volunteers are essential partners in creating a safe, supportive, and healing environment for individuals facing mental health challenges. Whether leading horses during therapeutic riding sessions, supporting clients during grooming time, or simply offering a calm and encouraging presence, our volunteers help build the trust and consistency that so many of our clients need.
This work is important because it goes beyond traditional talk therapy — it combines movement, connection, and a sense of purpose. With the support of trained volunteers, clients often experience breakthroughs in confidence, emotional regulation, and self-worth.
2. What do you wish people knew about mental health and volunteer service around it?
Mental health challenges are far more common than most people realize — and they don’t always look the way we expect. Volunteering in this space doesn’t require a clinical background; it just requires compassion, patience, and a willingness to show up. Often, simply being present with someone as they interact with a horse or work through a tough day can make a real and lasting impact.
3. How could someone get involved with your organization to address needs?
We welcome volunteers of all backgrounds and skill levels — no horse experience required! Volunteers can help with lessons, barn chores, client support, and special events. All it takes is a bit of training and a big heart.

4. What inspires you and/or your organization to support mental health through service?
We’re inspired every day by the strength of our clients and the healing bond between people and horses. Many of our participants — including veterans, children, and teens — come to us feeling overwhelmed or isolated. Watching them grow more confident, joyful, and connected through the help of horses and volunteers is nothing short of transformational. That transformation is what drives us to keep showing up, building community, and offering hope through service.
