Q: What was your journey to finding and joining AmeriCorps? Why did you choose to serve?

A: I wasn’t able to afford college, so I started looking for other ways to continue my education. At first, I considered joining the Peace Corps, but then I discovered AmeriCorps. I was really drawn to the idea of serving right here in my local community while working toward the Segal Education Award. I also appreciate how diverse the AmeriCorps programs are—you can find opportunities that match your interests and goals. The fact that the program also offers training and development was another big factor for me. I want to grow both personally and professionally while making a meaningful impact.

Q: What about serving in AmeriCorps makes you feel passionate and excited?

A: I know the work I’m doing is making a direct impact on my community, and that’s incredibly meaningful to me. It makes me feel like I’m part of the change this world needs. I truly believe that everyone deserves to find work they enjoy—something that gives them purpose. It might take a few tries to get there, but I know it’s possible. AmeriCorps has given me that opportunity. I’ve found work that I’m genuinely excited to show up for every day.

Q: How can you see or feel the impact of your service?

A: Working directly with the community, you witness so much gratitude and excitement from the people you serve. The organization I’m currently serving with, Girls at Work, provides an extraordinary space for girls to discover their inner strength and try new things. It’s a place where they’re empowered to grow and express themselves. I’ve already heard girls say things like, “This is the best part of my day,” and “I don’t ever want to leave.” Hearing those words has been incredibly moving. It reminds me just how important it is to keep showing up—for them, and for the change we’re creating together.

Q: What are your goals and next steps for life after being a member?

A: I’m looking forward to the rest of my AmeriCorps term and using my Segal Education Award to further develop my skills and knowledge. My hope is to continue working with the organization I’m currently serving at, Girls at Work, and to stay involved in my community. I truly believe in their mission and understand how important it is to continue sharing and living out the message they promote. Being part of that ongoing work would be an honor.

Q: How has service shaped what you will be moving onto next?

A: Serving as an AmeriCorps member has given me countless opportunities to grow into the person I want to become—both in my career and in my personal life. The trainings and events I’ve participated in have shown me what I’m capable of and what I can achieve. Being surrounded by passionate, supportive people who are dedicated to helping others and uplifting communities has truly changed my life.
